Pursuing our Mission
Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community exists to demonstrate Christ’s love by giving people the opportunity to live with dignity and purpose in a caring community especially designed to meet their needs.
“That Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is.” Eph. 3:17-19

People Make the Difference
Teresa expressed effusive “gratitude for all the wonderful activities Mom enjoyed while living independently in our Villa neighborhood plus in MCU. The care given her was the best and we are so certain we made the best choice for her to live at Sunshine Meadows: SMRC is truly top-notch. We would not have wanted her to live anyplace else in the world. Please let everyone know how thankful we are for her special care.”

Sunny’s Café
History and Purpose
History and Purpose
In 2012, Sunshine Meadows began to actively address offering more choices for our residents. In Dietary, this meant choices in dining; not only what residents eat, but where, when, and how they are served. Sunny’s Cafe, a restaurant within Sunshine Meadows which is open to the public, was the dream of administration and the Food Service Director. The goal of Sunny’s Cafe is to provide a variety of choices. Sunny's existence creates another dining option - to eat in a restaurant-style setting, perhaps with friends or family who visit, or for a special occasion such as a birthday. Residents can "eat out" without having to deal with weather or travel, and sit among people from the community whom they might not otherwise meet.
Sunny's offers a wide menu of homemade items, from burgers to breakfast made to order, as well as daily specials, a soup of the day, a salad bar, and a full array of desserts, most of them made from scratch with recipes developed especially for Sunny’s. We visit with our elders often to make sure we are offering what they want, as this encourages them to eat well, which reduces unwanted weight loss.
We also provide a fully stocked nutrition room of various snacks, juices, sandwiches, and frozen dinners. Between the offerings in our main dining room, Sunny’s, and a fully stocked nutrition room, our elders have an abundance of choices at any given meal and in between. Great strides have been made to insure food quality for our elders. We strive to serve the best food in the state of Kansas. Proof of this is found in our extension into the greater community. Sunny's serves a catered meal at the Buhler Senior Center every Thursday at noon. This is a well-attended, greatly appreciated service to those 55 or older in the Buhler area. Our delicious, nutritious meals are the focal point of good socialization among residents of the community and the independent residents at Sunshine Meadows.

Reinvesting Into the Campus

- After our Federal Fire Marshal inspection we were required to install a partition fire wall on the office wing. This project set us back financially which has stalled out the Capital Campaign efforts.
- Installed a new business, digital phone system.
- Moved and improved our Hair Salon to better serve our residents.
- Improved our van fleet by purchasing another mini-bus allowing the Life Enrichment Department to plan for more outings with the residents.
- Updated the commercial wash machine in Laundry after finding out we could not get parts for the old one.
- During 2018, SMRC is structuring its fundraising efforts. We will be working with a fundraising consultant to help us advance the already established Capital Campaign. A more focused direction will be laid out.
Investing Your Giving
- The majority of the gifts that come in annually are designated towards our 2020 Vision Capital Campaign. We have raised 1/4M dollars already towards our aggressive goal of $2M. A big note of appreciation goes out to SMRC loyal supporters.
- Our Gala is our most exciting fundraiser event of the year. Our proceeds from this event has been averaging $35,000 per year. Our Gala sub-committees have been working hard to put together another quality evening.
Life Enrichment
- The school partnership provides meaningful intergenerational activities. Students come to campus to read, play games, or doing various crafts.
- Hymn sings, Bible studies, church services, and a variety of music concerts are highlights for our residents.
- Trips to see the Christmas lights in winter and other trips through the countryside to observe the harvest are enjoyable times.
- The Life Enrichment Director is continually working to offer new and beneficial activities for all levels of care.
Reflections
"It is rewarding to see all we achieved in addition to the normal services provided. As a mission minded organization, we depend on discernment from our Heavenly Father to stay in tune to the direction we are called to go". ~ Keith Pankratz, CEO
